Handguns (which include pistols or revolvers and are also referred to as sidearms) are a type of secondary weapon in the Modern Combat series. Handguns usually have moderate stopping power and a low rate of fire. Lower caliber handguns usually have higher magazine capacities, while higher caliber handguns have more recoil, smaller magazine size and lower firing rates. Revolvers, a different type of handgun, tend to be the most powerful, but also generally sport lower magazine sizes and slower fire rates compared to normal high-caliber handguns.
Switching to a sidearm is always faster than reloading, making them ideal in combat situations when the player's primary weapon has expended its entire magazine. However, when aiming down the sights, they have little to no zoom, and they retain full "look/aim" movement speed of any other weapon when doing so.
Handguns do not appear in Modern Combat: Sandstorm.

- The sound for a silenced pistol in Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation is the same sound effect used for all silenced weapons in Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus and Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Shadow Vanguard, another Gameloft title.
- Attaching a suppressor to pistols in Modern Combat 3 does not keep them off the radar when firing.
- The .44 Revolver in Modern Combat 3 will always use a 6 round cylinder, even if the player uses the Extended magazine attachment. (Only available for campaign)
